May Update

I’m off on holiday for a few weeks soon (I’m doing the whole getting married / honeymoon thing, yikes!), so I thought this would be a good opportunity to answer a few questions and give a little update on what’s left to do in ‘Pumped BMX 2’. Oh and shove some videos up too. First up: commonly asked questions.

Commonly asked questions

When is Pumped BMX 2 going to be released?
The short answer is: when it’s ready. Longer answer: I’m in the awesome position where I don’t have anyone telling me what to, so I don’t have to release Pumped BMX 2 until I’m happy that it’s ready. The last thing I want to do is push it out early to please a few folks but end up with a sub-par game. So I’m just going to keep chipping away at it until it’s done. Having said that, I’ll be a bit annoyed if it’s not out by the end of the Summer.

When is the Android version coming out?
With Pumped 1 I had a totally separate company do the Android version for me. That was cool because it was one less thing for me to worry about, but at the same time I lost a lot of control over the game. With Pumped BMX 2 I’m making the game using an engine called Unity 3D which is cross platform, meaning I can (in theory) develop once and publish everywhere. However it’s not quite that simple, and in practice the Android version is going to need a lot of testing. Plus I’ve not published to Android before, so I’m going to have to learn my way around that. So my plan is to get the iOS version out first, and then hit the Android version hard. I honestly can’t say how long it’ll take, but I’ll be going as fast as I can, promise!

Any plans for a PC version?
Maybe. Again, because I’m using Unity 3D the game works on PC pretty much out of the box. The menus will need a fair amount of work, but other than it shouldn’t be too bad. However playing on a keyboard totally sucks, so if I release it it’ll probably be gamepad only. I’ll get the iOS and Android versions out of the way and see what’s going on, there’s potential to go the ‘Steam Greenlight’ route.

What about consoles?
Getting a game out on consoles is not easy. At all. Don’t hold your breath!

What’s already done

The environments have been created, the character models have been created and most of the level designs have been finalised. The animations are all done, and most of the challenges have been created!

When I write it like that it sounds like it’s pretty much finished. Unfortunately it’s not quite that simple…

Still to do

There is still a fair amount left to:

  • Finalise level designs
  • Finalise level challenges
  • Decorate levels with trees/cactii/rocks etc.
  • Create final obstacle (e.g. manual pad) models and textures
  • Create tutorials
  • Create GameCenter challenges
  • Hook up GameCenter leaderboards

And only once that is all done do I start testing, polishing and optimising! And then more testing, polishing and optimising. And then more…

Summary

So it’s all going well, as I said I’m taking a few weeks off in about a week, but I’ll hopefully have some people testing the game while I’m away. I’m currently working on the tutorials which should (fingers crossed) be a lot more fool proof than in Pumped 1, and then once that’s done I’ll be finalising and decorating levels. So far so good!

First off, congrats on getting married. Enjoy it!

Secondly, I’ve been drooling over this game since seeing screen shots seemingly forever ago. I still bust out Pumped 1 all the time when I am waiting in line for something.

Looking forward to wasting a lot of time at work riding trails as stylish as I wish I was in real life.

Thanks a lot man! Haha yeah it feels like ages ago I released the first screenshots (January I think). It’s definitely come a long way since then, going to smash out the rest once I get back from honeymoon – can’t wait for everyone to play it.

Hey dude! Love pumped 1 and super stoked on the new game, just a quick question.
How does the whole 360 thing work, like is there a spin button like the flip one?

Congrats dude on the getting married part of life!

This game hands down is the best phone game out! Thanks for making that happen. I do have a question though, is there anyway for you to monitor hacked scores in the Game Center?? I was ranked #1 at one point in the overal section but then these outrageous scores came out of no where, it kinda killed the desire to improve scores.

Anyways have fun and I look forward to pumped 2

    Ps
A response would be awesome lol

Hey don’t know if your actually going to see this or not but I was just wondering if you would be able to spoil some of what we can look foreword to in pumped bmx 2 like if there will be costumizeable bikes or characters?
